What is ALS? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's disease," is a progressive fatal neuromuscular disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain to the spinal cord. ALS is one of the most devastating of disorders which affect the function of nerves and muscles. Once thought rare, it is now fairly common, with 5000 new diagnoses per year in the USA. Most who develop ALS are between the ages of 40 and 70. Click here for more info on ALS.
