"My Grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." From my other experiences living overseas, I had an idea what to expect for life in rural Guatemala. I know I wouldn't have all the comforts of home and I was okay with that. What my past experiences haven't taught me is what working overseas is like. I have to say that I am genuinely surprised at how difficult it is. I've explained a little bit of the different communication styles that we have to overcome, but I'm learning that it's a lot more than just how we communicate that can be an obstacle. I work in an office in a small town and this office is like any office you would find in the States. They have their own office politics and power struggles that you would find anywhere, but for some reason I didn't expect it here. My job is to go out to the smaller communities around Nebaj to help people grow vegetables. It's a relatively straight-forward task, but because the people don't speak Spanish I always need a translator with me. This is where my struggles lie. There is no one specifically assigned to help me so I must rely on the good will of the others in the office to make time for me and go to the communities with me. Unfortunately everyone is very busy and I am lucky to get to each community that I work in once a month. That is frustrating enough, but on the other side I have the management wanting me to prove each day that I am actually working and getting things done. As you can see, I feel a bit caught in the middle. It's great when I actually get to the communities. Sometimes the people in the community aren't as prepared for my arrival as I'd like them to be, but at least I can talk to each family individually and try to help them with any questions or problems they are having. It's the days that I am stuck in the office having to find evidence of my work that are especially difficult for me. I would ask that you would pray for me, especially on these days. I am feeling very frustrated and weighed down right now and could use your prayers to lift me up. I certainly don't want you to think that all is difficult right now though. I am really enjoying living here in the mountains of Guatemala. It's a beautiful place and I have made great friends here which I really appreciate. Except for the troubles at work, I am really happy. I can definitely praise God for helping me make a home here. I am also enjoying seeing and even taking part in some of the traditions of Guatemala. For example during holy week there is a long tradition of covering the streets with flowers and dyed sawdust to make beautiful and intricate carpets. They take hours to make the carpets and only minutes to destroy them as a procession carrying large statues of Jesus carrying his cross are carried through the streets. I had the privilege to help make one of these carpets. It took us about 6 hours to make, we started at 10 PM so that it would be ready for the procession that came through at 5 AM. It was a great one-time experience. So, I thank you for your continued support as God continues to work in my life here in Guatemala. Praises: - People are learning about growing vegetables. - That Nebaj is beginning to feel like home. - For the good friends I have here. - For friends and family who love and support me from home. Requests: - To follow God's will and find peace in the office. - For continued patience and perseverance in language and culture learning. - To be working how and where God is working. ------------------------------------------------------------------ REGULAR WEEKLY EVENTS: SUNDAY: 9:00 am - Sunday School for all ages (Sept. - May) 9:00 am - Morning Worship Service 10:30 am - Morning Worship Service 6:30 pm - Adult Choir rehearsal (November, January) MONDAY: 8:00 am - Body & Soul Fitness (http://cvbc.net/women/bodyandsoul) 12:00 pm - Staff prayer session (all welcome) 7:00 pm - Boy Scout Meeting (except holidays & post-campouts) TUESDAY: 6:30 am - FCA Men's Bible Study (YMCA in Chippewa Falls) 9:00 am - Ladies' Missionary Fellowship (1st Tues. each month) 9:30 am - Tuesday Morning Moms (http://cvbc.net/women/tmm) WEDNESDAY: 8:00 am - Body & Soul Fitness 9:00 am - Women's Bible Study 12:00 pm - Men on the Move (Maux Creative Studio) 4:30 pm - Youth Choir (Sept. - April) 6:00 pm - AWANA (Sept. - April) (http://cvbc.net/awana) 6:00 pm - Jr. High Youth Groups 7:30 pm - Sr. High Youth Groups THURSDAY: 10:00 am - Women's Bible Study 11:30 am - Senior Saints Pot-Luck (2nd Thurs. each month) 6:30 pm - MOPS (3rd Thursday of each month) (http://cvbc.net/mops) FRIDAY: 8:00 am - Body & Soul Fitness SATURDAY: 7:30 am - Men's Breakfast (1st & 3rd Saturdays) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ELDERS: DEACONS: Tom Arneberg Dave Bishop Dan Burns Joe Cherrier (Treasurer) Stuart Krause John Griffith Bryan Kriehn Mark Hedrington Jim Haley Jon Strand Keith Tompkins Darin Thomas Jim Woldhuis Brad Robb Dennis Wolf Glenn Woods Marty Schultz Willy Wendler Jon Strand ELDER CANDIDATES: DEACON CANDIDATES: Church Office: 715-723-2872 Youth Ministries: Brian Webb, (563-5385, youth@cvbc.net) Children's Ministries: Linda Balsiger (382-4858, children@cvbc.net) Music Ministries: Terri/Dora/Bev (music@cvbc.net) Teaching Elder: Jim Woldhuis (726-1339, jimw@cvbc.net) Administrative Dir.: OPEN Church Secretaries: Libby Krause, Chris Kriehn (secretary@cvbc.net) Cleaning/Setup: Mary Jorstad (janitor@cvbc.net) Financial Secretary: Ryan Burr (treasurer@cvbc.net) CVBC Email: info@cvbc.net ------------ CVBC is on the Internet at: http://cvbc.net ------------
