Why the Christmas story?Have you ever asked why? Why Jesus? Why the Christmas story? Why God becoming a man? Have you ever wondered what it was really all about? The answer is all wrapped up in God's unconditional love for you. Like the present that waits for you under your Christmas tree, God's love waits for the day you will open it. To see how this all came to be, we need to travel back in time a bit before the first Christmas. It began, at least from our human perspective, with the creation of the world. I know that for years we have been taught that we simply evolved and that we are the product of random chance. But such reasoning violates the very laws that our whole scientific community operates under as well as the laws of probability and common sense. Design demands a designer. Life can only come from life, never from non-life. Rocks do not give birth. Something cannot come from nothing. The Ultimate cause of all causes must be eternal, that is without beginning or end or there could be nothing now. The question is not: "Is there a God?", the question is: "What sort of God is He?" Christmas answers that question. Long before the first Christmas, we (mankind) messed up big time. We chose to snub our noses at the Creator God and violated the only rule He had put in place. Through our first parents we chose to walk away from God and live our way. Our choice put distance between us and the Creator, the Giver of Life. In essence, we choose death over life. Just as the "live" Christmas tree in our home is actually dead, so we are cut off from God by our sin and through we look alive are actually dead as far as our spirit goes. Our Creator immediately set in motion a plan to rescue us from our sinful foolishness. His answer is the Reason for the season. His answer is Jesus. God so loves us that He sent His Son to rescue us from our choice to walk away from life. The Christmas story is really the story of the greatest rescue mission ever undertaken. Love was the motivation -- God's love for us -- even though we had chosen to ignore, mistreat, violate, rebel and sin against Him. The good news is that the rescue mission was successful. Jesus accomplished all that God sent Him to do. He lived without sin. He walked and ministered among us, demonstrating who He really is. He died on a Roman cross in our place. His death was His gift forged out of the love He has for us. By bearing our sins on the cross He removed the curse of death from us, offering us eternal life. No greater gift has ever been placed under a tree. May I ask you a question? Have you ever opened His gift? Have you ever picked up His gift and un-wrapped it? You can do so by believing and entrusting your life to Him. If you have not personally received Jesus, God's greatest gift, as your rescuer from sin, please do so this season.
