Small Groups

CVBC’s small groups exist to provide a place where Christians can be encouraged to be more like Christ in a smaller community of Christians. The Sunday morning gathering is essential to a Christian’s life. However, CVBC believes that becoming more Christ-like involves more than merely attending an hour on a Sunday morning. Small Groups provide another primary avenue for you to look more like Christ individually and for our church to look more like Christ corporately! How do small groups cultivate this Christ-likeness? By creating and sustaining a culture of FellowshipAnd how do we have fellowship? Primarily through prayer and godly conversation about Scripture.

Fellowship: Small Groups provide an environment where Christians can gather together as individuals who all share in the same goal: to know Christ more. Thus, one of the greatest needs for Christians is Christian friends to motivate them toward this goal. Small Groups provide an environment where individuals can know one another, encourage each other, and share their lives together as they pursue the same goal (Acts 2:42-47; John 17:21-23; Heb. 10:24-25, Romans 12:15-16). There are two activities that promote fellowship:

  1. Prayer: Small Groups are a microcosm of the larger church gathering. So the priorities of the church should be the priorities of the small group. Thus, a small group will be a place where Christians can pray for one another’s spiritual lives, needs, and requests. Prayer is one of the chief avenues to Christ-likeness and one of the primary ways we encourage fellow believers (Acts 2:42; Philippians 1:3-11; Heb. 4:16; Col. 4:2).

  2. Godly Conversation: Small Groups gather to look more like Christ. The conversations that happen at small group are intentionally about God and His Word. Small Groups are not merely a social gathering but a Christian gathering that believes the Bible is the chief means that sanctifies the church. Thus, small groups are structured to talk through a passage of Scripture, a sermon, or a topic about the Christian life. (Acts 2:42; John 17:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; Psalm 1:1-3).
